Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

If you’d like to try using prune purée in some of your favorite holiday recipes, use these guideline from our friends at Bake from Scratch:
- Swap for sugar: Use prune purée to replace anywhere from one-third to half of the sugar in a recipe.
- Swap out eggs: To replace 1 large egg, use ¼ cup (60 ml) prune purée. Keep in mind that this works best in recipes that call for no more than 3 large eggs.
- Lose the fat: To cut down on fat, replace up to half of the butter or oil with an equal amount of prune purée.
Why are prunes a great alternative to sugar in this Crinkle Cookie recipe?
Because prunes are naturally sweet, they are an obvious choice for a healthy sugar alternative. In addition to reducing (or eliminating) the need for refined sugar or butter in your favorite recipes, prunes are a healthy powerhouse and provide many essential vitamins and minerals that will level up the nutritional value of any recipe! Prunes are low glycemic and loaded with fiber, polyphenols, boron, potassium, and Vitamin K which collectively can contribute to gut health, reduced inflammation, cancer prevention, blood sugar control, bone health, and reduced cholesterol!
Are Chocolate Crinkle Cookies easy to make?
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are quick and easy to make. In fact, the hardest part of this recipe is letting the dough chill in the fridge for a half hour (patience is a virtue, people). If you’re baking with kids, they’ll love helping to add the ingredients to the mixer, rolling the cookies into balls and coating them with powdered sugar!
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup California Prune purée
- 2 eggs
- 2 TBSP vegetable oil
- 1 ⅔ cup flour
- 1 TBSP baking powder
- ½ cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a bowl whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, California Prune purée, eggs, and oil, until everything is well-combined.
- Sift the flour and baking powder into the chocolate and California Prune mixture and mix with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it forms a dough.
- Take a teaspoon of the mixture, roll into a ball, and place on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Repeat until all the mixture has been used (there should be between 30-40 balls).
- Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to firm up.
- After 30 minutes preheat the oven to 375°F (190C).
- Take the cookies out of the fridge and roll each cookie in powdered sugar, coating them well.
- Space the cookies evenly on the tray, giving enough space around each cookie to leave room for them to spread.
- Place in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and allow them to cool. They will firm up as they cool.
