Peanut Butter Sandwich with Honey and Prunes
You’ll adore this old-fashioned Peanut Butter Sandwich with Honey and Prunes. This Heritage Recipe was created by Clare Thompson, the daughter of Greg Thompson who represents California Prune Growers through the Prune Bargaining Association. Clare came up with this Prune, Nut Butter, and Honey Sandwich when making lunch for her dad and brother as they were headed out to put bees in the orchard.
How to make this Peanut Butter Sandwich
It almost seems silly to explain how to make a peanut butter sandwich, but there are a few tricks to make sure your sandwich is top notch.
Use good quality bread: The key to any good sandwich is really good bread. For this sandwich, we love a whole wheat honey number, but it that’s not your thing, country white bread would work beautifully.
Slice the prunes: You want to spread out the flavor and get the prunes a little flatter. Clare cuts her prunes in half, but you could definitely do thinner slices.
Don’t skimp on the honey: You definitely don’t need to measure out the honey but we prefer a generous drizzle. You want this sandwich to be extra sweet and delicious.
Prunes vs. Jelly
Most jellies are loaded with extra sugar. Prunes are naturally sweet (and have a richer flavor than most jellies). There’s nothing wrong with the traditional PB&J – this version just has bigger, more refined flavors.
A word about nut butters
If you would prefer to avoid peanut butter, any nut butter works beautifully on this sandwich. Try almond butter, cashew butter or even sun butter.

Peanut Butter Sandwich with Honey and Prunes
Ingredients
- 2 slices whole wheat honey bread
- 3 TBSP crunchy peanut butter
- 3 California Prunes cut in half
- 1 TBSP Honey
Instructions
- To make this sandwich, spread peanut butter on one slice, arranged pitted prune strips on top, drizzle with honey, cover with a second slice of bread, and enjoy!
