Promising Prune Bloom Signals Quality Prunes for California Growers

ROSEVILLE, CALIF. — April 15, 2024 – This year’s crop is off to a great start with a promising prune bloom. As spring unfolded in California, prune orchards burst with vibrant prune blooms, signaling a promising season ahead. California growers reported ideal weather conditions across the Golden State pointing to the potential to produce a quality crop.

The bloom in prune trees is a significant milestone in the orchard cycle and diligent agricultural practices at this stage are critical for the coming months. Prune growers closely monitor the weather and bee activity for pollination to ensure a consistent quality fruit set.

“The bloom not only showcases the beauty of nature but also indicates the beginning of another season for premium fruit with legendary taste and large size potential our growers produce,” said Donn Zea, Executive Director of the California Prune Board. “The skill in the orchards, backed by the industry’s investment in research and robust marketing efforts is what sets California apart.”

With a combination of expertise, innovation, and a deep-rooted commitment to quality, California is poised to deliver premium prunes that delight consumers worldwide. The California prune industry remains in relative balance due to having over 100 years of experience, building solid demand, and maintaining careful inventory management for a thriving future.

While the natural environment will have the final say, California’s prune growers continue to steward the earth and remain optimistic about the season ahead as they watch for the fruit set to come. When late summer arrives, the California difference continues after harvest with the climate-controlled tunnel dried prunes that safely reach 60 countries every year.
